Hi Everybody,
The Mekong River is one of the world’s great rivers and is an enormously important part of the culture — and survival —
of China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Many stories and folk-tales have been written and told about life along the river for centuries.
In Thailand, the Mekong is essential as a source of water, food and transportation. It supports a thriving fishing industry, which supplies food for millions of people and also helps to sustain many villages and communities along its banks.
The great river is woven into local traditions,
festivals, and folklore, reflecting the deep connection between the Thai people and the Mekong River.
For me, it is a storehouse of memories from my youth and early adulthood. Friends and I frequently travelled to villages along the river to experience the people and the wonderful food they had created and nurtured for so many years.
For all of these reasons I have dedicated this class which, I hope, captures much of the spirit and flavours of the river and
its people.
