The Wonderful Tastes of Great Britain and Europe
|
Hi everybody,
We've had a number of requests from Kallayanee's Kitchen students for an account of our recent trip to Great Britain and Europe. We had a great time and I very much enjoyed sampling the different tastes and flavours of Great Britain, Holland, Germany and Belgium.
Our trip was very much a "Friends & Family" affair as we travelled in Great Britain from London to Oxford to Sheffield and to North Wales. In Europe we visited Amsterdam, The Hague, Berlin, Antwerp and Rotterdam. Family and friends hosted us everywhere we went and we are very thankful to all of them for a wonderful holiday!
Here are some of the dishes that we enjoyed in all of these places!
The Food in Great Britain was surprisingly good

TRADITIONAL ENGLISH BREAKFAST IN OXFORD
We enjoyed this treat in a wonderful Bed & Breakfast with our friends David and Gill McKenzie. It was a combination of ham, tomatoes, mushrooms, hashbrown potatoes, sausages, and fried eggs, topped off with English brown sauce and ketchup.
AND YET ANOTHER VERSION OF THE ENGLISH BREAKFAST
Baked beans and avocado slices were a tasty addition to this hearty breakfast favourite. It was cooked by our pal Richard Evans in North Wales.
If you're interested in learning how to make the traditional English breakfast, please click here for a video tutorial by another one of my English friends, Jon McKenzie,
David McKenzie's son.
YE OLDE YORKSHIRE PUDDING
This traditional English treat was done to a turn in the oven by our Sheffield friends Andy and Maryanne.
YE OLDE ENGLISH ROAST BEEF
The beef was roasted to medium-rare perfection, with just a tinge of red showing.
BOTH ADDED UP TO A TRADITIONAL ROAST BEEF DINNER
The combination of both, with mashed potatoes, carrots and roasted cauliflower with cheese was absolutely delicious. Our thanks again to Andy and Maryanne!
European Breakfasts were more Varied
|
European breakfasts are quite different from those we enjoyed in Great Britain, or in Canada, for that matter. Their variety of tastes and flavours were actually closer to the breakfasts we eat in Thailand, where we are not so locked into standard ingredients.
SLICED MEAT AND CHEESE BREAKFAST IN HOLLAND
This was a lighter breakfast than our groaning English plates, but very tasty. We enjoyed it in The Hague, with my sister Ting and her husband, Peter Vonck.
OMELETTE IN ANTWERP
Light and fluffy, with a salad and healthy brown bread, this was a delicious breakfast that we shared in Antwerp, Belgium, with my cousin, Oluthai and her husband, Ben.
HERRING ROLLMOPS AND CHEESE IN BERLIN
Yes, herrings do go very well at breakfast, just as fish is great to start a day in Thailand.
European Lunches and Dinners were a great Treat!
|
A FRESH SALAD IN HOLLAND
Fresh bread, eggs, fish and fresh vegetables made for a delicious salad in The Hague.
MINIATURE PANCAKES IN HOLLAND
We selected these for a special lunch and were delighted by their light, fluffy goodness.
RAW HERRING AND ONIONS
The annual herring run in the North Sea had just begun when we arrived so we were treated to this traditional Dutch dish. And, yes, they WERE raw and served only with onions.
A FEAST OF PORK IN BERLIN
This was a fantastically delicious sampling of pork cooked in a variety of ways with potatoes, cabbage and sauerkraut. But I was absolutely stuffed by the time I had finished my plate!
Well, that's about it. Of course, there were many more dishes that we enjoyed on our vacation but we just don't have the space to describe everything. I hope you have enjoyed this sampling, even if you can't experience the tastes yourself!
